SmartNet v. m.Globe

SMART Communications is about to offer unprecedented low cost internet access through its Netphone with its SmartNet service. Globe Telecom has offered its own m.Globe service to match SMART's offer. Here is a quick comparison of the two services.


Handset cost.
SmartNet - SMART Netphone at Php9,900
m.Globe - Use your existing handset with a Globe Sim at Php0 to the price of any handset you buy. If you are buying a phone for this service, I recommend an Android since Globe Telecom has an app for Android.

Service cost.
Note. Globe Telecom and Smart Communications offer prepaid services, at daily to monthly rates. For this comparison, we are using monthly rates.

Initial monthly cost:
SmartNet - Php999 via prepaid.
m.Globe - Php0

Calls and text:
SmartNet - 200 minutes calls and 3,500 SMS within the SMART network. Already included in the monthly prepaid fee. 
m.Globe - You can get unlimited calls and text within the Globe Network for Php599.

In network instant messaging:
SmartNet - Unlimited messaging via Netphone messenger and FX messenger to other SMART Netphone users.
m.Globe - None.

Social networking:
SmartNet - Facebook and Twitter. Already included in the monthly prepaid fee.  
m.Globe - Facebook and Twitter. Free.

Web browsing:
SmartNet - 1GB of data. Already included in the monthly prepaid fee.  
m.Globe - You can buy 1GB of data valid for 30 days from Globe Telecom for Php499.

Free email access:
SmartNet - None, you will have to use your 1GB of data for internet access.
m.Globe - Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Windows live.

Other web access:
SmartNet - None, you will have to use your 1GB of data for internet access.
m.Globe - News, UAAP and movie schedules and reviews.

Total service cost:
SmartNet: Php999 a month (200 minutes calls and 350 texts within the SMART network)
m.Globe: Php1,198 (but with unlimited calls and texts within the Globe network).

Beneficiaries of the new service.

SmartNet: SMART Netphone users.
m.Globe: All Globe Telecom subscribers.

Looks like a close fight on paper, but we will have to see how good each service is.
