Toshiba Satellite U840-1005U

The fourth lower cost Ultrabook we have seen on the shelves of local resellers is the Toshiba Satellite U840. What is a "lower cost" Ultrabook? While Intel specifies that Ultrabooks should have SSD drives, to cut cost several manufacturers have released Ultrabooks with hybrid drives, which combines a SSD drive with a conventional hard drive. We have seen these lower cost Ultrabooks being priced between Php44,900 to Php49,990. The Toshiba Satellite U840 us priced Php49,990.

The Toshiba Satellite U840 combines a 16 GB SSD drive with a 320 GB hard drive. This 14-inch Ultrabook is 0.78 inches thick and weighs in a 3.8 pounds. The Toshiba Satellite U840 has very decent specifications:

Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium
Processor: Intel Core i5-2467M (1.60GHz, 3M L3 Cache)
Graphics: Intel HD 3000
Memory: 4 GB
Storage: 320 GB hard drive with a 16 GB SSD as a hibernation partition
Optical drive: None
USB 3.0: Yes
HDMIA Out: Yes

At nearly four pounds I see this Ultrabook competing more with offerings like the Apple MacBook Pro and Sony Vaio SB than the MacBook Air or Asus Zenbooks.

I still get the feeling that even these 45K-50K ultrabooks are priced a bit to high to become mainstream laptops in the Philippines.
