ClamCase ClamBook - Convers your smartphone into a laptop

Smartphones will replace your personal computer. Well at least several companies are trying to make this a reality. In 2011, we saw Motorola's Lapdock for its smartphones. Canonical came up with a system to have a desktop Ubuntu Linux OS run on your Android smartphone, which would allow you to plug your smartphone into a display, and with a keyboard and mouse, convert it to a desktop.

Another company is going to give it a go. ClamCase has announced it ClamBook for Android and Apple phones.  The Clambook works like Motorola's Lapdock. Plug in you phone, and the phones display will be displayed on the screen.

The are not many details right now, and no details on the iPhone version. Presumably, ClamCase would want to see what the next version of the iPhone is like.

But ClamCase has announced that ClamBook will have a 13.3-inch LED-backlit display with  a 16:9 aspect ratio and WXGA (1280 x 720) resolution, the same resolution as high end Android devices. The ClamBook itself looks like an Ultrabook or MacBook Air. The ClamBook has a keyboard and multi-touch touchpad, with dedicated Android keys for functions like Home, Back, and Menu. It does not have a touchscreen so you have to manipulate the interface using a mouse.

The Clambook does not have a processor or graphics processing unit. Your smartphone does all the work and smartphones screen is displayed on the ClamBook. The ClamBook does have battery which not only powers the screen, but also charges your phone while it's docked.

We do not have details on the exact size or weight, but given that the ClamBook won't have a processor, RAM, a hard drive or even flash storage, we can imagine it would be very light, somewhere in the area of 2.5 pounds of less. Given that is is just a display and a battery, it should be pretty cheap too.

The ClamBook is expected to be available by the end of the year.
