The Asus Memo Pad ME172v is now available in the Philippines. With this release, Asus will really shake up the market. While low cost tablets are nothing new, this is by far the cheapest tablet available from a major computer manufacturer.
The Asus Memo Pad ME172v is a 7-inch Android tablet which runs Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. The 7-inch screen has a decent 1024 x 600 resolution. Not the sharpest display available, but a very decent on for the asking price. This tablet runs on a single core 1 GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor on a VIA WM8950 processor. While a single core processor is not very powerful by todays standards, Asus makes up for it by providing power graphics, in the form of a Mali 400 graphics chip, and a decent amount of RAM at 1 GB. Internal storage is only 8 GB, but this is expandable via a MicroSD card slot. You get WiFi and Bluetooth but no GPS. Given the price, that is acceptable. Completing the package, a 4270 mAh battery will keep this running all of seven hours. All in all, not bad for a tablet that is less than half the cost of a Nexus 7.
