The Globe iPhone 16GB 4S versus the Smart iPhone 16GB 4S - Postpaid options

Both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications have conjured up numerous plan options to get you an Apple iPhone 4S on a postpaid plan. Both companies' offerings are more extensive than they have done on any previous phone. In comparing the two, it is best to take it slow. This article compares Globe and Smarts plans for the iPhone 4S 16GB variant.

@Plan 2499. Both Globe and Smart offer the iPhone 4S 16GB free at Plan 2499. Globe Telecom offers it under its regular Plan 2499 Data Plan.

Globe Plan 2499

  • Php1500 consumable
  • Unlimited data
  • 5 freebies
A: 10 mins of calls & 200 SMS to Globe/TM
B: 5 mins of call & 25 SMS to other networks
C: 10 mins IDD & 10SMS to 10 international destination
E: Unlimited Call & Text to 1 Globe/TM number
Smart created a specific plan for the iPhone, a Plan 2499 data

Smart iPhone Plan 2499

  • 300 minutes calls to all networks
  • 300 SMS to all networks
  • 1GB of Data

Comparing the two, it is Smart that offers a better deal. For those heavy on voice calls, you have 300 minutes a month. If you did this with Globe's Plan 2499 and made 300 minutes of calls within the network and calls outside the network and sent 300 SMS, your bill would be near or over 3K, even counting the freebies. But if there is one Globe number you call a lot or the IDD freebies appeal to you, this could negate Smart's call advantage.

Globe offers a better deal on the data and SMS. If you are not heavy on voice calls, Globe offers unlimited data and you can consume the entire Php1,500 on SMS.

Both are great plans, but choosing between the two, I like the Globe offering better. iPhones have iCloud, Siri (which uses data) and 425,000 apps (many of which use data).

At Plan 2499, Globe looks like the better offering. It is a smartphone, and smartphones work best with unlimited data. But depending on your use, the Smart plan may be better.

Smart Data Plan 2000. But actually Smart has another option to get a iPhone 4S 16GB, Smart Data Plan 2000.

Smart Data Plan 2000

  • Cash out Php2,500
  • 150 minutes calls to all networks
  • 200 SMS to all networks
  • Unlimited data

This is the plan I use right now and my bill has been Php2,200 or less for the past eleven months, so this is the Plan which fits me best. If I got an iPhone, I would choose this plan.

Globe Data Plan 1799. Globe has a plan that can match Smart's Data Plan 2000.

Globe Plan1799
  • Cash out Php4,800
  • Php800 consumable
  • Unlimited data
  • 3 freebies
A: 10 mins of calls & 200 SMS to Globe/TM
B: 5 mins of call & 25 SMS to other networks
C: 10 mins IDD & 10SMS to 10 international destination
E: Unlimited Call & Text to 1 Globe/TM number

Smart Plan 999. Smart has a Plan 999, but we don't like this one.

Smart Plan 999

  • Cash out - Php999 a month for 24 months
  • 100 minutes calls to all networks
  • 40 SMS to all networks
  • 250MB of data

If you are paying Php1,998 a month you might as well cash out a bit a get one on Smart Data Plan 2000 or Globe Data Plan 1799.

For prepaid options follow this link.

  1. The information is well. It make easier to known about iPhone and its uses. Description describe well plans and phone information. That make it very flexible.

  2. does globe and smart allow tethering or using the iphone4s as modem for laptop?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Globe allows it except on BlackBerry Plans. Smart used to not allow it, but it no longer is listed as a restriction in their website. I would ask Smart directly though, their data plans have some strange restrictions.

  4. Finally, someone breaks it down in an easy to understand read. Smart ignored my requests on twitter (that's the norm).
    THANK YOU. Finally, someone cares.

  7. On paper it is a true unlimited plan and have not heard any complaints on restrictions.

  8. Just came back from a smart office this afternoon. Smart's unlimited data plan is not exactly true. If you read their contract, it just gives you 1.5 gb of data at 3G speed, if you exceed the 1.5 gb your speed will slow down to 24 Kbps for the rest of the month !!!

I have not yet checked with Globe if they have that restriction also. Can anyone from globe answer it?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Globe does not have a similar restriction, although data capping is not always a bad thing since it prevents network congestion. A common problem with local internet is the unlimited offers often result in use beyond the capacity of the system.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks for your info about the restriction. I agree with you that putting a cap on data is not necessarily a bad thing. But I have an issue with the very low cap 1.5 gb only, too small, and by the way, Smart does not allow push email and many other services that should be standard to iPhone ( if one is to utilize the full potential of iPhone) so I hope subscribre will study the contract first before signing it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Globe unlimited service has less restrictions. Smart also does not allow use of the hotspot and tethering and which email app you can use is not clear. You can use the GMail app on Android without additional charges. Nokia Mail is subject to additional charges. I am not sure about the rest.

  12. The day od "The Customer is KING" is over. Now we are all at the friggin mercy of these GREEDY companies. You know the mean of R.I.P? Well Smart can rot in hell!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sorry, don't know what to say about that. But hopefully Smart reads this and tries to improve whatever problem they have had with you. Would be better if you could provide a more detailed explanation of the problem.

  14. I took my smart buddy sim out of the galaxy y and placed it in the iphone 3g. CELLULAR DATA OFF.
Then i reversed the process. LOAD LOST. smart doesn't want to help, they just want my load. I DID tweet smart. No use calling the CS as it's a call center and the waiting time is always 30 mins or more.
    Thank you.

  17. I am sorry, I really do not know. I have been on Smart post paid since the Smart Amazing Phone and the old Addict Mobile plans. I worked my way up to Gold Plan 1800 and Data Plan 2000 so they did not ask me for income info.

On Twitter try asking @SMARTCares. Helpful bunch of people.

  18. i cant understand the globe plan.
do u only need to pay 2499/month or theres an additional fee for the plan? i mean for the unli mobile surfing?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Php2,499 includes unlimited data.

    ReplyDelete
  20. how about the 1799 plan cashout 4800 is that true? and if its true does it gives u unli data also?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yup, Globe has a Data Plan 1799 (make sure you do not avail of the regular Plan 1799).

I think Plan 1799 + Php4,200 cash is a better deal than Plan Plan 2499.

Might as well get Plan 1799 + Unlimited Calls and SMS. Cost will be the same as Plan 2499.

    ReplyDelete
  22. so if i go to globe centers ill just tell them about the 1799 + cash out plan for iphone 4s?

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you are going to subscribe for an Unlimited Plan go with Globe they don't have those restrictions Smart's imposing to their subscriber who are supposedly on "Unlimited Data Plan". 1.5G Bandwith Cap (1G for Iphone). Additional charge for push emails, tethering and hotspot use, and they cant even tell which App can be used where there will be no additional charges.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Globe has clearer guidelines with their unlimited data plan. I am a retention customer, and I would rather retain my number.

If not, from a point of view of terms and conditions, Globe has a better data plan. Sometimes you get billed for "Value Added Services" even if on a data plan. I think it is a accounting/recording issue for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  25. what do u mean by php1500 consumable?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Of the Php2,499 in the plan you pay Php999 for data. This leaves Php1,500 for calls, SMS, MMS and the like.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would definitely go for globe. for smart this is the downside, No tethering, Unlimited Browsing only and a 1.5gb fast data limit, and it will slow down to less than 50kbps until the end of billing cycle. which horribly sucks.

I mostly used my smartphone for data intensive task. I could consume more than 800mb a day. 1.5gb is a little bit short for me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The data limit is a plus or a minus depending on your needs. I like the fact that it will allow Smart to prevent network congestion. I used to use Globe Visibility which went from fast to completely useless in a matte of months.

I use it for email, news, traffic, social networking and the like, so this plan is okay with me. If you are a data intensive user, best to look elsewhere though.

  29. when you apply for smart postpaid plan for iphone 4s, can you get immediately the phone?? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I depends if you get immediate approval and if the phone is on stock at the Wireless Center. New applications using credit auto-debit or retention customers usually get immediate approval.

    ReplyDelete
  31. On smart data plan 2000 how will I know if I consume the 100minutes of call and 200sms? So that no additional fee on my bill?

    ReplyDelete
  32. You can check your balance online. If you use your 150 minutes and 200 SMS it will read Php800... but is not too accurate since it does not tell you what the charges recorded are for.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. On data plan 2000, when checking online or through txt what is the meaning of running balance? If I have running balance of 1899 does it mean I already consumed the 150 minutes call and 200 minutes of txt? And this will cost addItional payment on my account?

  34. I am not sure if it automatically sets the APN in the Globe Network. A friend of mine got a iPhone 4S from Smart and had the same problem. I had to set the APN manually in the settings.

    ReplyDelete
  35. HOW TO SET THE APN IN THE SETTINGS? =(

    ReplyDelete
  36. You will have to get the Internet APN settings of Globe for pre-paid or postpaid, depending on what kind of plan you have. It is the same for all Globe prepaid or postpaid phones.

This Apple support site will show you how to set it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2283

  38. Hi i just want to ask, i just had my iphone 4s from smart plan 2000 and when i check my bal tru txt what does running bal mean?? Is that additional charge? And isn it true that there's restrictions for its unli data.. I really don't get the deal why is it called inlimited when its not..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. While the plan comes with 150 minutes of calls and text, when you check you running balance it gives it to you in pesos, which is a bit confusing. From your running balance, they deduct 150 minutes of calls and 200 SMS. Basically, if you use 150 minutes of calls and 200 SMS your running balance will be about Php800. Your monthly bill will be Php2,000.

The internet is unlimited. The initial problems which early adopters have is mostly resolved. I say mostly resolved since I get charge Php10 every month for Facebook access. But since it is just Php10 a month, I have not bothered to contest it.

Smart does retain the right to throttle down your speeds if you exceed 1.5GB in a month. I have never experienced a throttle down, but since I use my connection for the phone only (not as a modem for a laptop) I doubt I have ever gone beyond 1.5GB.

  39. Went to smart wireless store yesterday and asked about iphone plans, looks like i have no chance at all to get this for the requirements they told me... ex. credit card limit must be 50k, (my cc is 25k limit only). Monthly salary should be 25k,.. i think getting this iphone 4s will remain in my dreams... --- how sad :(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry to hear about that, but I think the iPhone 5 will be more a phone of dreams. The iPhone 4S is an incremental upgrade. Might not be the best phone to tie yourself for two years for. In the meantime, why not take a look at Sony's Xperia Neo V. Good phone to tide you over.

      Delete
    2. i dont have cc :( what requirement do i need if i have 25k monthly salary? :) payslip??

  40. Sorry, I do not know the requirements. You can try asking @SMARTCares on Twitter, or better yet just go to a Wireless Center and see what they can do.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is this still accurate? I checked the globe website and cash out at Plan 1799 is P17,499 and not P4,800

    ReplyDelete
  42. What's the maximum speed for globe's unli data plan 1799?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Globe and Smart do not advertise specific speeds for their mobile phone plans. The fastest speed we have seen reported for Globe 7.11 Mbps. But remember that since mobile internet uses Near Line of Sight technology location and obstructions matters a lot.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Pero decent nmn kaya yung speed ng globe? Planning to apply for one.

      Delete
    2. Both Globe and Smart offer decent speeds, but it does depend a bit on the area. If you have a 3G phone, you may want to try mobile data using a prepaid card first.

Kasi baka selected apps lang yung kasali sa unlimtied data nila.

looking forward to your prompt reply.

    1. On Smarts Unlimited Data Plans, I have never encountered the issue of speeds slowing down because of the cap, and Smart is not likely to implement it unless the network becomes congested. But the cap is a part of the contract so if you plan to use more than 1.5 GB a month, you may be better off with Globe. Capping is designed to ensure that a reliable service can be provided, and that is why I selected Smart.

Also Smart's iPhone 2499 plan is limited strictly to 1 GB, after which you will be billed for additional usage.

You can use all apps. What I was advised not to use was Opera Mini. I also advise that you do not go to social networking sites using the mobile website. Sometimes Smarts I think billing mistakes this as availing of their
Value Added Service of providing unlimited Facebook or Twitter access for one day for Php10. Smart provides this service using Opera Mini through a mobile site. Do your social networking using apps instead.

Still I regularly get billed Php10 to Php30 pesos a month for Facebook access, I get Facebook updates through the FriendStream app every for hours, so there still appears to be a small bug in the Smart billing system.
