Acer Aspire One AO722-C60

Acer has released a refreshed version of its Aspire One 722 notebook. The older version, with model number AO722-C52, was powered by a AMD C-50 APU. The new model, the AO722-C60, has the newer and more powerful AMD C-60 APU and has doubled the amount of RAM installed, now coming with 4GB.

The AO722 is a nicely built 11.6-inch laptop. There is a bit of keyboard flex, but other than that the rest of the package is solid. Measuring 11.2 x 7.9 x 1.0 inches and weighing at three pounds, with the supplied 6-cell battery, it is one of the thinner and lighter 11-inch laptops in the market.

Specifications wise, the new AO722 is well kitted. Priced at Php21,500, it comes with 4GB of RAM, 256MB of RAM for the graphics card and a 500GB hard drive. For ports and connectivity you have Bluetooth, card reader, Webcam, WiFi, HDMI and the other ports you would expect to found in a modern laptop. There is no USB 3.0 port though. The OS is also better than you would expect at this price, Windows 7 Home Premium.

Going to the APU, the C-60 runs at 1.0 GHz, same as the C-50. The difference is that the C-60 has a turbo mode which lets the processor to run at up to 1.33 GHz when needed. The other half of the APU is the graphics processor, which has been upgraded to the Radeon HD 6290. The newer graphics processor tins at the same 276 MHz of the Radeon HD 6250 on the C-50, but graphics is also blessed with a turbo mode, and can run as fast as 400 MHz on demand.

The problem with the AO722 is that its 21.5k asking price puts it in competition with more powerful AMD E-350 and E-450 powered laptops. The new C-60, is a big improvement over the C-50. It should be about 80% as powerful as the E-350, with the additional RAM closing the gap even further. At the same time, it should run cooler than AMD E series APU's. I would go as far as to say that the new AO722 is a better choice than the HP DM1z. But the upgrades in the AO722 are enough to make it a viable option for those looking for something thinner and lighter than a HP DM1z.

  4. Picked one up for the wife and she likes it a lot. It is replacing her HP G61, which has a faster CPU and a convenient number pad, but too big and heavy to be carried around unlike my MacBook Pro 15" even though the screen size is almost the same.

Anyway, it is fast enough for what she needs especially with 4GB of RAM and dedicated video, but more importantly, it has a long run time and stays relatively cool.

  5. Yes, 4 GB of RAM is a really good amount to have on a Windows 7 laptop.

  6. I am thinking about getting this one or the HP dm1 but I can't decide between the two.

I've read some reviews comparing them and it seems like HP dm1, having the AMD E-350 processor despite the lack of RAM, is a better option.

What really attracts me to the AO722 is the price plus it comes with 4gb RAM, 500gb HDD, and Win7 Home Premium (dm1 @ Octagon comes with Home Starter). I am just not sure if in the long run, getting the Acer would be a better choice.

    Your thoughts, please?

    Thanks! :) - Johnny

    1. Facebook games should be okay. In theory in can play both 720p and 1080p video. If you ask me only 720p video is a sure thing. I would really recommend you get a AMD Fusion E-350 or E-450 powered unit instead.

    1. Still, take a look at the Samsung NP305. AMD E-450 at 18-19K.

  10. Nice review sir. Between this and the Samsung 305 which would you choose?

    1. The Acer Aspire AO722's are powered by the lowered powered AMD C-50 and C-60's. I have used this unit and find it noticeably slower than the AMD Fusion E-350 and E-450 units. I would pick the Samsung NP305/ That being said, I do find the Samsung key's a bit smaller than I would like and would go for the Asus, or Lenovo offering instead.

    2. Ok. I'm particular with the display though. Which has the best screen?

    3. If you are asking in terms of quality... neither has a great display, but nothing in the price range does. Nothing particularly wrong with both either.

    1. Between those two, the Vaio Y. I am not a big fan of the AMD C-60 platform. A bit too sluggish for me.

    2. thank you for your reply sir.

would that still be your suggestion sir even if the OS of vaio is only windows 7 starter and the RAM is only 2GB as compared to Premium and 4GB of 722? thank you again sir

    3. Upgrading RAM is cheap these days. If you don't mind not being to change wallpaper, W7 Starter is fine. The C-60 performance is poor IMO. If is like a dual core Atom netbook with a better graphics card. But, try them both and see which you like best.
